ACS Participates in AORTIC Conference 2009; Record Attendance of More Than 700 Global Government and Health Leaders

American Cancer Society staff and volunteers took part in a major African cancer conference organized by the African Organisation for Research and Training in Cancer (AORTIC) and supported by the American Cancer Society and other organizations, held from Nov. 11-14 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. AORTIC Conference 2009, the third meeting of its kind, convened more than 700 global government and health leaders, the largest gathering of experts on the continent. Through presentations and workshops, conference participants addressed the growing cancer pandemic in Africa and how to make cancer control a priority on the health care agendas of all African countries.

ACS hosted pre-conference workshops on cancer and tobacco control for African nongovernmental organizations and journalists. During the conference, ACS staff and volunteers delivered presentations at key plenary sessions and workshops on tobacco control, advocacy, and cancer planning.

The mission of the American Cancer Society is to eliminate cancer as a major health problem. Because cancer is a global health problem, this mission extends around the world. Cancer is increasing as a leading killer globally, especially in the developing world.

The American Cancer Society is emerging as a global leader in addressing the growing cancer burden. We fight cancer through three areas of global mission delivery: advocacy, capacity building, and information.
